Erwin Piscator, der im Herbst 1951 aus der amerikanischen Emigration zurückgekehrt war, ist als Gastregisseur für die erste Theaterinszenierung im neuen Gebäude eingeladen.
Mit Walter Gropius hatte Piscator 1927 das "Total-Theater" entwickelt.
Ohne daß Erwin Piscator die Vorgeschichte des Theaterprojekts von Mannheim kennt, wird anläßlich des Jubiläums und der Eröffnung des Theaters am 13. Januar 1957 seine Neuinszenierung der "Räuber"- legendär seit der Inszenierung von 1926 - für ihn zum Anlaß für Erfahrungen mit dem Bau Webers und dessen eigenartigen Zitaten, die nicht nur die Kubatur von Mies, sondern auch die "Arenabühne" von Gropius banalisierten.

Erwin Piscator had returned from American exile in the fall of 1951. Piscator had developed the "Total Theater," a new type of mobile theater with film projection, together with Walter Gropius in 1927.
Erwin Piscator was unaware of the events leading up to the theater project in Mannheim. Just the same, his new production of the "Räuber" - legendary since the 1926 production - on the occasion of its anniversary and the official opening of the theater on January 13, 1957, gave him an opportunity to become acquainted with Weber's building and its strange quotations which trivialized not only Mies's commitment to the cube, but also Gropius's arena stage.
